Risks Posed by Disruptive Technologies: Lessons from CES (Consumer Electronics Show)
Board members must become aware of the numerous challenges, and potential opportunities, posed by what is an unprecedented wave of game changing technologies happening at the same time in order to meet their responsibilities to shareholders. Many of these disruptive technologies, driverless cars and trucks, AI, robotics, wearables, virtual reality, to name a few, were on display at this years' CES. CES offered more than just a glimpse into what is now being developed and what is coming that you need to be aware of as directors. We are fortunate to have at our breakfast program, a diverse panel of CEO's and board members who are on the front lines of dealing with these issues. The panel will be led by Erin Essenmacher, Chief Programming Officer, NACD, who attended CES and interviewed leading authorities on what our realities will be tomorrow morning, as well as the day after, and produced the very helpful NACD CES® 2018 Experience videos.

Maureen ConnersBoard Director at Fashion Incubator SF, Macy’s Union Square
Maureen is a Board Director at Fashion Incubator SF at Macy’s Union Square. She is a former Board Director at Deckers (NYSE: DECK) where she chaired two committees: Compensation and Nominating/Governance. She is a visionary leader and former senior executive at Gillette (P& G), Levi’s and Mattel – who helped build iconic, world-class brands, launched many new products and helped increase shareholder value. Maureen advises CEO’s and Boards on strategy and new technologies for increasing global growth. Her article on The Innovation Era’s Implications for Boards was recently published in NACD Directorship magazine. She is a speaker on the topic of new technologies and their strategic impact. Her recent talks have been at The NACD CES Experience, Deloitte’s Board Director Symposium, the High-Tech Retailing Summit at CES, The Wearable Technologies Conference and Newco on Fashion, Retail, and Tech. Maureen is a mentor at Plug and Play Tech Accelerator and serves on the Board of NACD Northern California and The Smithsonian Libraries.
John HottaCorporate Board Director
John Hotta is a corporate board director, who helps boards and C-suite leaders understand technology (including artificial intelligence and cybersecurity) and helps organizations succeed in the fourth industrial revolution. He graduated with honors with degrees from Harvard University, the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, and UCLA. The Financial Times named Hotta as one of the Agenda Digital 50. His roots and passion are in technology. He began his career conducting artificial intelligence research at the RAND Corporation. Then he spent over 20 years in technology leadership roles at Microsoft, Accenture, and AT&T. He helps board members and C-level leaders to change their organizations and culture to optimize technology and unleash innovation. He has served as chair of a board-level Technology Advisory Committee and he has introduced companies to accelerators and incubators. In 2018, he will serve as a short-term CIO to be part of management to change technology and culture. He is a board member of billion-dollar nonprofit and a multi-billion-dollar healthcare company. He has deep experience on Nominating / Governance Committees and Finance Committees. He has earned designations as a: (1) Board Leadership Fellow and (2) Governance Fellow from the U.S.-based National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD). Recently, he co-founded Capital Expert Services, LLC, which provides experts to professional-service firms, Fortune 500, and SMEs. Also, he places experts into speaking and instruction roles at events and universities. He is a business advisor to public and private company boards and senior management on governance, technology, and mergers and acquisitions (M&A).
John OsbornChief Executive Officer, OMD USA
John Osborn is Chief Executive Officer of OMD USA. John joined OMD this year after 25 years with BBDO, where he acted as President and CEO of the New York Agency for the past 13 years. Under John’s leadership, BBDO New York more than doubled revenues, expanded its client base to include categories like BtoB, retail, healthcare and more, and diversified its workforce. He also led the agency’s transformation into data, marketing science, communications planning and social and digital innovation. The result: BBDO New York was named Agency of the Year more than 15 times by various media outlets, including being named Social Agency of the Year by MediaPost in 2016 and Webby Agency of the Year in 2017. Over the years, he has demonstrated that he is an energetic, positive and passionate leader with a proven ability to build strong client relationships and to lead big multi-disciplinary teams in the creation of powerful communication programs. In his current role, John has the opportunity to bring his expertise to the media side. John’s notable accomplishments over the years also include his involvement with the “New York Miracle” campaign, which helped lift spirits of New Yorkers in the wake of the September 11 attacks. John has been equally active outside business, lending his talents to other important causes. He is Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Police Athletic League of New York (PAL), and he serves as Chairman of the Board of the American Red Cross for Greater New York and as Chairman of the Global Dignity organization. He has served as Chairman of the Board of the American Advertising Federation (AAF), the “unifying voice for advertising.” More recently, John was elected to the Board of the Nelson A. Rockefeller Center for Public Policy and Social Sciences at Dartmouth College. And he accepted an invitation from Fordham University to serve as an Executive-in-Residence for its Center for Positive Marketing. In recognition of his accomplishments, John was a recipient of a 2012 AdColor Award celebrating diversity champions in advertising, media, marketing and public relations. In 2003, he was inducted into the AAF Hall of Achievement, which honors people 40 years of age or under for their contributions to business. He has also been named to the Crain’s New York Business list of “40 under 40” as well as BtoB magazine’s “Who’s Who in BtoB.” In 2006, John was named a “Young Global Leader” by the World Economic Forum. In 2016, PAL recognized John as its Superstar of the Year and the AAF presented him with the Barton A. Cummings Gold Medal Award – its highest honor for service to the Federation and its membership. John earned his BA at Dartmouth, for which he continues to serve as a member of its Alumni Association and Friends of Dartmouth Hockey Program. He is married to Lesley and is the proud father of a 13-year-old daughter (Caroline) and a 12-year-old son (John Jr.).
Erin EssenmacherChief Programming Officer, National Association of Corporate Directors
Erin Essenmacher serves as the chief programming officer for the National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD), responsible for content curation, strategy and execution of more than 60 virtual and brick and mortar education programs and events a year. Essenmacher is also an award-winning writer, director, and producer with 20 years of experience in media production. She has written, directed, and produced films for PBS, The Discovery Channel, Animal Planet, the History Channel, and Court TV, and produced and co-wrote the critically acclaimed independent documentary MINE. She currently serves on the boards of Women in Film and Video and Gandhi Brigade, a youth media non-profit.
